Generator Interconnection
Reform of Generator Interconnection Procedures and Agreements
What This Order Did
Order 845 reformed the large generator interconnection procedures to better accommodate the evolving resource mix, particularly variable energy resources like wind and solar. Key changes included new provisions for surplus interconnection service, which allow generators to use existing interconnection capacity more flexibly — for example, by adding a co-located battery to an existing wind farm without a new interconnection study. The order also required transmission providers to post more interconnection-related information publicly and to update their study processes to reflect modern grid conditions. These reforms were designed to modernize the interconnection framework as the power system transitions to a cleaner resource mix.
