Order 845 — Interconnection Reform (Variable Resources) (2018)

Definition

Reformed large generator interconnection procedures to better accommodate the evolving resource mix — particularly variable wind and solar — by introducing surplus interconnection service, which allows an interconnection customer to use spare capacity at an existing interconnection point (for example, adding a co-located battery storage system to an existing wind farm) without triggering a full new interconnection study. Required transmission providers to post more interconnection data publicly and update study processes to reflect modern grid conditions. These changes reduced costs and barriers for developers repowering or expanding resources at existing grid connection points.
