Ancillary Services

Operating Reserve – Spinning Reserve Service

Definition

An ancillary service consisting of unloaded generating capacity that is synchronized to the grid and can respond automatically and immediately (within 10 minutes) to serve load following a sudden loss of generation or transmission capacity. Spinning reserves must be online and operating at part-load, ready to ramp up instantly, serving as the first line of defense against unexpected generation or transmission contingencies.
