Ancillary Services

Regulation and Frequency Response Service

Definition

An ancillary service that uses Automatic Generation Control (AGC) to match, in real-time, the moment-to-moment fluctuations in load within a Control Area, maintaining grid frequency at 60 Hz. Generators providing this service must automatically and continuously adjust their output within seconds in response to frequency deviations detected by AGC systems, acting as the instantaneous balancer of supply and demand.
