Ancillary Services

Definition

Services necessary to support the transmission of electric power from seller to purchaser, given the obligations of control areas and transmission systems to maintain reliable operations of the interconnected transmission system. FERC Order 888 identified six categories of ancillary services: Scheduling/Control/Dispatch, Reactive Supply and Voltage Control, Regulation and Frequency Response, Energy Imbalance, Spinning Reserve, and Supplemental Reserve.
