Ancillary Services

Reactive Supply and Voltage Control Service

Definition

An ancillary service that provides reactive power (VARs) from generating facilities to maintain transmission voltages within required operating limits. Generators must continuously vary their reactive power output to compensate for load changes and system conditions. Without adequate reactive supply, voltage levels can collapse, leading to widespread equipment damage and blackouts.
