Alternative Transmission Technologies

Definition

Non-conventional transmission solutions that the Transmission Provider is required under Section 7.3 of the LGIP to evaluate in every Cluster Study as potential substitutes for conventional Network Upgrades. Technologies include static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs), static VAR compensators (SVCs), advanced power flow control devices, transmission switching, synchronous condensers, voltage source converters (VSCs), advanced conductors, and tower lifting. The Cluster Study Report must document the results of this evaluation and explain whether each technology was rejected or incorporated.
