FERC Orders

Order 764 — Variable Energy Resource Integration (2012)

Definition

Required transmission providers to adopt 15-minute scheduling intervals — replacing the prior hourly system — to better match power system operations and accommodate the variable, sub-hourly output variations characteristic of wind and solar generation. Also established intra-hourly scheduling requirements and improved operators' ability to manage transmission constraints driven by fluctuating renewable output. By aligning market scheduling timescales with real grid dispatch intervals, Order 764 reduced dispatch inefficiencies and enabled more reliable, lower-cost integration of renewable energy resources.
