Definition
The ability of a power system to maintain acceptable voltage levels at all buses under both normal conditions and after being subjected to a disturbance such as a transmission line trip or sudden load increase. Voltage instability can lead to progressive voltage collapse — a condition where voltages fall uncontrollably — and is driven primarily by insufficient reactive power support relative to load demands.
