Grid Operations

Balancing Authority Area

Definition

The collection of generation, transmission, and loads within the metered boundaries of the Balancing Authority. The Balancing Authority maintains load-resource balance within this area — continuously matching aggregate customer power and energy requirements (electric load) against available generation and scheduled interchange. A single utility's service territory, an RTO/ISO region, or a group of cooperating utilities may constitute a Balancing Authority Area; it is the fundamental unit of real-time grid balancing in North American reliability standards.
