Grid Operations

Automatic Generation Control (AGC)

Definition

A real-time control system that continuously adjusts the output of designated generating units within a Control Area to match load, maintain scheduled interchange with neighboring Control Areas, and hold grid frequency at 60 Hz. AGC is the operational mechanism that defines a Control Area under the OATT — the four statutory obligations of a Control Area (load-resource balance, scheduled interchange, frequency maintenance, and operating reserves) are all implemented through the AGC scheme. Regulation and Frequency Response Service is the ancillary service that funds and provides the generating capacity used by AGC.
