Grid Operations

Transient Stability

Definition

The ability of a power system to maintain synchronism among all generators following a severe, sudden disturbance such as a fault on a transmission line or the sudden loss of a large generator. If the system cannot maintain synchronism, some generators will 'fall out of step,' causing protective relays to trip them and potentially leading to a cascading collapse. Transient stability is a key constraint in transmission planning.
