Grid Operations

Pumped Storage

Definition

A grid-scale energy storage technology that pumps water from a lower reservoir to an upper reservoir during off-peak periods, then releases it through turbines to generate electricity during peak demand. Pumped storage acts as both a load (while pumping) and a generator (while discharging), providing rapid ramping, peak shaving, and operating reserve capability. Because it can shift large power flows across hours, pumped storage significantly affects transmission loading patterns, congestion, and the economics of moving renewable energy from remote generation areas to load centers.
