Grid Operations

Power Factor

Definition

The ratio of real power (watts) to apparent power (volt-amperes) in an AC electrical system, expressing how efficiently electrical power is being converted into useful work. A power factor of 1.0 (unity) means all supplied power is doing useful work. Lower power factors require more current to deliver the same real power, increasing transmission losses and reducing the effective capacity of transmission facilities.
