Definition
The fundamental reliability standard requiring that the bulk electric system must be able to withstand the sudden, unexpected loss of any single transmission element (a line, transformer, generator, or bus) without causing cascading outages or uncontrolled load shedding. The N-1 criterion is mandated by NERC and is the baseline standard for all transmission planning studies and real-time operations.
