Load Shedding

Definition

The systematic reduction of system demand by temporarily decreasing load in response to transmission system or area capacity shortages, system instability, or voltage control considerations. Load Shedding is an emergency tool of last resort used by system operators when generation or transmission deficiencies cannot be resolved by other means, and involves deliberately interrupting service to customers to protect the broader grid from collapse.
