Definition
A numerical computation — typically using the Newton-Raphson or fast-decoupled method — that solves the nonlinear AC network equations to determine steady-state bus voltages, current flows, and real and reactive power flows throughout the transmission system for given generator outputs and load demands. Power flow studies are the foundational tool for transmission planning, ATC calculation, interconnection studies, contingency analysis, and post-fault operating studies. NERC reliability standards require solving hundreds or thousands of power flow cases under various contingency conditions to demonstrate system adequacy.
