Definition
An early term for a machine that converts mechanical energy into direct current electricity through electromagnetic induction — essentially a DC generator. Modern bulk power systems no longer use dynamos; instead, synchronous generators produce AC power that is transformed, transmitted, and distributed throughout the grid. The term persists in historical plant documentation and general discussions where 'generator' and 'dynamo' are used interchangeably.
