Current

Definition

The rate of flow of electric charge through a conductor, measured in amperes (A) or kiloamperes (kA). In AC transmission systems, current flows sinusoidally at 60 Hz and its magnitude determines how much power is being transferred for a given voltage. High currents cause I²R resistive losses that heat conductors, and every transmission element — lines, transformers, circuit breakers — has a thermal current rating that must not be exceeded to prevent physical damage or reduced equipment life.
