Definition
A generating system that converts sunlight directly into electricity using semiconductor photovoltaic cells, typically arranged in panels and connected through inverters that produce AC power synchronized to the grid. PV systems are inverter-based resources (IBRs) whose output varies with solar irradiance and weather, creating unique interconnection study requirements for voltage ride-through, frequency response, and reactive power capability. FERC Orders 792 and 845 established specific technical requirements for interconnecting small and large PV facilities.
