Definition
An electrochemical energy storage installation — typically lithium-ion batteries with power conversion inverters — that can charge from and discharge to the grid on command. BESS can provide energy arbitrage, peak shaving, frequency regulation, and emergency backup, acting as both load (charging) and generation (discharging). Under the LGIP, a BESS that injects electricity qualifies as a Generating Facility and must meet interconnection requirements including ride-through, protection, and metering at the point of interconnection.
