Definition
A synchronous generator driven by a water turbine, converting the kinetic and potential energy of flowing or stored water into electrical energy. Water is delivered to the turbine through a penstock (a large pressurized pipe) from a reservoir or river diversion. Hydroelectric plants offer flexible dispatch — especially reservoir-based facilities — and can provide rapid ramping, black start capability, and reactive support, making them valuable grid assets whose output patterns significantly influence regional transmission flows.
