Generation Fundamentals

Gas Turbine

Definition

A combustion turbine prime mover that burns natural gas or distillate fuel to produce hot, high-pressure exhaust gases that spin turbine blades connected to a generator. Gas turbines can start rapidly and ramp quickly, making them the primary technology for peaking plants, spinning reserves, and grid reliability support. Their fast response supports frequency regulation and emergency generation, but their concentrated output during peak periods can stress transmission paths already loaded by high demand.
