Megavolt-Ampere Reactive (MVAR)

Definition

The standard unit of reactive power in power systems, representing one million volt-ampere reactive. Reactive power (MVAR) is the component of apparent power associated with the cyclical charging and discharging of inductances and capacitances in AC circuits. Unlike MW, reactive power does no net work over a full cycle but is essential for maintaining transmission voltages within acceptable limits. Generators, capacitor banks, reactors, and FACTS devices all produce or absorb reactive power measured in MVAR.
