Megavolt-Ampere (MVA)

Definition

The unit of apparent power in AC power systems, equal to one million volt-amperes and representing the vector sum of real power (MW) and reactive power (MVAR): MVA = √(MW² + MVAR²). Transformers, transmission lines, and generators are rated in MVA because their thermal (current-carrying) limits depend on the total current magnitude, regardless of how much of that current is delivering real versus reactive power. Equipment MVA ratings are the binding physical limit that cannot be exceeded without risking overheating and damage.
