Electrical Engineering Fundamentals

Kilowatt (kW)

Definition

A unit of real power equal to 1,000 watts, commonly used for distribution-level loads, small generators, and distributed energy resources. Residential and commercial demand, rooftop solar nameplate ratings, and battery inverter ratings are typically expressed in kW. When aggregated across many customers, kW-scale resources sum to MW-scale system load and generation that transmission providers must accommodate through distribution and bulk power infrastructure.
