Definition
The standard unit of voltage in bulk power transmission systems, equal to one thousand volts. Transmission lines operate at specific voltage classes — commonly 115 kV, 138 kV, 230 kV, 345 kV, 500 kV, and 765 kV in North America — with higher voltages enabling lower current for the same power transfer, thus reducing I²R transmission losses. The choice of transmission voltage is a key design parameter balancing line cost, losses, and transfer capability; higher voltage classes are used for longer distances and larger power flows.
