Horsepower (hp)

Definition

A unit of mechanical power originally defined for steam engines, equal to 746 watts (or approximately 0.746 kW). Horsepower remains common in legacy generator and prime mover nameplate ratings — particularly for hydro turbines and combustion engines — even though electric power in the bulk system is expressed in MW. Converting between horsepower and kilowatts is occasionally required when evaluating older plant documentation or mechanical drive equipment at industrial interconnection sites.
