Definition

A set of conductors, insulators, supporting structures, and associated equipment used to move large quantities of power at high voltage over long distances. The overhead conductor system typically comprises three phase conductors suspended from steel lattice towers or wood poles, plus one or two overhead ground wires for lightning protection. Conductors are typically ACSR (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced) or newer ACCC (Aluminum Conductor Composite Core) for higher ratings. Transmission lines are characterized by their distributed resistance, inductance, and shunt capacitance per unit length, which determine impedance, charging current, thermal rating, and stability-limited transfer capability.
