Definition

A rigid, bare conductor — typically flat aluminum or copper bar, or tubular aluminum — within a substation that electrically connects multiple circuits at a common voltage level, serving as the junction node between incoming transmission lines, transformer terminals, and other equipment. Substation bus configurations (single bus, double bus with bus-tie, ring bus, breaker-and-a-half) offer different levels of reliability and operational flexibility; a breaker-and-a-half arrangement allows any single breaker failure without losing service on any connected circuit.
