Definition

An instrument transformer that produces a secondary voltage precisely proportional to the primary line-to-line or line-to-ground voltage, stepped down to a safe, standard level (typically 120 V secondary) for use by protective relays, revenue meters, and control systems. PTs (also called Voltage Transformers or VTs) allow relays and meters to monitor transmission voltages without direct connection to high-voltage conductors. Revenue-grade PTs must meet strict accuracy requirements; relay-grade PTs must maintain accuracy during fault conditions when voltage may be severely depressed.
