What is inside a large power transformer?
An LPT steps voltage up for long-distance transmission or down for distribution. The laminated GOES core channels magnetic flux; copper or aluminum windings carry current; cellulose pressboard and mineral or ester fluid provide dielectric insulation; OLTCs adjust voltage under load; and high-voltage bushings interface with the grid.

GOES, copper, and insulation
Grain-oriented electrical steel prices rose roughly 50–80% since 2019. Copper windings remain the efficiency standard; aluminum offers lower cost but requires ~1.6× cross-section for equivalent resistance.
Why transport is its own project
LPT units are monolithic — 200–400+ tons. North America operates roughly 30 Schnabel rail cars; loaded moves may crawl at ~15 mph after months of bridge and clearance surveys.
