Definition
The component of electric power associated with the energy stored and released by inductors and capacitors in AC power systems, measured in VARs (volt-ampere reactive). Unlike real power (watts), reactive power does no net work but is essential for maintaining voltage levels across the transmission grid. Insufficient reactive power leads to voltage collapse; excess reactive power causes dangerously high voltages.
