Electronic Tariff Filing

Order 714 required electric utilities and other FERC-regulated entities to file their tariffs electronically using a standardized XML-based format, replacing the prior system of paper and PDF filings. The structured electronic format dramatically improved the machine readability, searchability, and public accessibility of tariff information. By standardizing how tariffs are filed and stored, the order made it easier for market participants, regulators, and the public to understand the terms and conditions of electric transmission and wholesale sales services. This modernization of the tariff filing process was foundational infrastructure for digital access to FERC regulatory documents.
